Nigeria’s Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has stated that President Muhammadu Buhari had no knowledge Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen was facing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Saturday.
Osinbajo again felt saddened by the trial of Paul Usoro, National President of Nigerian Bar Association.
CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen was last week arraigned before the Code of Conduct Tribunal for non-declaration of assets while NBA President Paul Usoro is being tried by the EFCC for funds received as payment for job done by Akwa Ibom State governor. However, the Federal Government has asked that the trial of the Chief Justice of Nigeria be discontinued.
Prof Osinbajo started that until Saturday evening, Buhari was unaware that the Justice Onnoghen was standing trial for financial misconduct and exonorated the president of having a hand in the trial.
While expressing the unfortunate turn of events with the CJN, Osinbajo explained that Buhari has asked that anti-graft agencies be allowed tocarry out the constituitional duty.
The state by the Vice President was made in Abuja during a conference themed “Free Press and objective reporting in the 2019 election year.” put together by Online Publishers Association of Nigeria.
“I must tell you in clear terms that, for President Muhammadu Buhari, his whole approach is that institutions should just do their work.
“I can tell you for a fact that he did not even know about this (CJN trial) until Saturday evening. I don’t feel good about it that senior members of my profession are being tried.
“He did not even know that there was going to be any kind of trial until Saturday evening.
“He had said categorically, ‘Don’t interfere with whatever institutions are doing.’
Sometimes, it has consequences such as we have today, such that people say, ‘How can such an important person be subjected to trial without the Federal Government?’
“But I can tell you without any equivocation that he (Buhari) was not aware”, he said.
